Tirano is a town where history feels quietly alive, shaped by its sanctuary, its noble palaces and its position at the meeting point of Italy and Switzerland.
It grew along the route linking the Valtellina to the Engadine, and became a place of pilgrimage after the apparition of the Virgin Mary in 1504, celebrated by the Renaissance Sanctuary of the Madonna di Tirano. Noble families such as the Salis built elegant palaces in the old town, protected by medieval walls and gates. Since 1910 Tirano has also been the southern terminus of the Bernina railway to St. Moritz, part of the Rhaetian Railway listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. Few places in the Alps combine faith, history and spectacular landscapes so naturally.
Modern Tirano blends this heritage with a welcoming alpine atmosphere.
